My philosophy for life came from what I learned from Acting
There are 5 Principles that I have learned from those who taught me acting, that have become, not just good for my acting, but a philosophy for how I now live my life. The first three are from Sanford Meisner and the last two are from Charlie Laughton.
- Live Moment To Moment
- Live Truthfully
- Don’t Live in the Past.
- Don’t attach yourself to the result.
- Enjoy the journey.
Live Moment to Moment. I never did that before studying the Meisner Technique. My mind was always racing and could not relax with where I was in my life… ever, which caused me some anxiety. Live Truthfully. Part of Living Truthfully for me meant to be myself and just come from my truth which helped me to relax, be myself and not try to be something or someone that I wasn’t. Don’t Live in the Past. This was a big one for me. I could not get out of my own way because I was keeping myself stuck in my past, seeing myself as the victim. I have learned now that we must learn from the past, but we have to leave it behind and stay in the moment. Don’t attach yourself to the result. I have spent so many years focused on the result. Look at my life and thinking, “When I make it as an actor, become famous, rich…, then I will be happy.” I had no idea what that would look like, or feel like, but I assumed that this illusion that I have never experienced, would bring me the happiness that I longed for. Enjoy the journey. This is where I am now. I am enjoying the journey of my life and what a Wonderful journey it is.
